FAQs
What are Mylar bags?
Mylar bags are durable, multi-layer and food-safe bags designed to block light, moisture, and oxygen. When paired with oxygen absorbers, they create an airtight environment that preserves dry foods for years, making them a go-to choice for long-term food storage.
How long can food last in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers?
Properly sealed Mylar bags with the right oxygen absorbers can extend the shelf life of many dry foods — such as rice, beans, flour, and pasta — for up to 30 years, depending on storage conditions.
What foods should not be stored in Mylar bags?
Moist, oily, or high-fat foods (like fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and dairy products) are not suitable for long-term Mylar storage because they can spoil or turn rancid. Mylar bags are best for dry, low-moisture foods, ideally those with less than 10% moisture content.
Do I really need oxygen absorbers with Mylar bags?
Yes. Oxygen absorbers remove residual oxygen inside the bag, preventing mold, pests, and spoilage. Without them, food may not last nearly as long, even in high-quality Mylar bags. Foods that should NOT be stored with oxygen absorbers include sugar, baking powder and soda, and salt, as they do not need them and will clump if added.
What size Mylar bags should I use for food storage?
It depends on your storage needs. Our 1-gallon bags are great for regular use, while 5-gallon bags are ideal for bulk storage or storage in buckets. We have sizes down to 1-cup for spices and dried herbs. Using different sizes allows flexibility and reduces waste when opening stored food.
How do I seal Mylar bags at home?
You can seal Mylar bags using a heat sealer, flat iron, or hair straightener. The goal is to create a strong airtight seal across the top of the bag after adding food and oxygen absorbers.
How many oxygen absorbers do I need per Mylar bag?
The required amount depends on bag size and food type. For example, a 1-gallon Mylar bag typically requires one 300–500cc oxygen absorber, while a 5-gallon bag usually needs 2000–2500cc in total. Less densely packed foods i.e. pasta will require more versus a densely packed item like rice.
Can Mylar bags be reused?
Yes — if the bag is cut carefully and not punctured, it can be reused by resealing. However, for long-term storage, most people prefer new bags to ensure maximum protection.
What’s the difference between Mylar bags and vacuum seal bags?
Vacuum seal bags are thinner and remove air mechanically, but don’t block light well. Mylar bags are thicker, lightproof, and combined with oxygen absorbers, provide superior long-term storage. Vacuum seal bags are best for short- to medium-term use, while Mylar bags excel in long-term storage.
Where should I store Mylar bags filled with food?
For best results, keep them in a cool, dry, and dark place — ideally inside food-grade buckets or totes. Avoid exposure to sunlight, moisture, or fluctuating temperatures to maximize shelf life. The bags are not rodent-proof so be sure to store away from where rodents may have access or place in a bin with a strong lid.
